“Access to Global Value Chains”

Even the most skilled and well-funded microentrepreneurs are unlikely to raise sufficient and regular incomes to feed their children if they don’t have access to markets.  In addition, not every microfinance borrower has the talent or time to manage a small business, and many of them would prefer regular salaried employment.  In order to concurrently address these two issues the concepts of Value Chain and Cluster Development have been successfully combined by development programs such as JOBS Bangladesh.

Under this project, JOBS International, with support from sister organization JOBS Bangladesh, will assist Save the Children, USA and local partners, to:

  • Develop a Value Chain/Cluster Scan (VCCS) that could be used by any organization interested in identifying the potential for the development of specific value chains and clusters in a given country.  The VCCS would take the form of a checklist to, 1) assess the presence of the necessary conditions for successful development of value chains and establishment of clusters, and 2) identify the sectors which, when inserted into global value chains, are most likely to lead to sustainable employment for poor households.

  • Field-test the VCCS in Uganda.

  • Develop a workplan for the development of one or two clusters in Uganda, in close collaboration with local financial services providers, and identify market opportunities for cluster-produced products in established international markets.

Participating partners in this activity include the Save the Children - USA, Save the Children - Uganda, Makerere University, JOBS International and JOBS Bangladesh.
